It has been leaked in the past and is now officially official, the Thrustmaster Ferrari 488 Challenge wheel. However, it does not come alone, but, at least currently, only in combination with the TS-PC Racer wheel base.
Celebrating Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary
This is not the first Thrustmaster Ferrari product celebrating Ferrari’s 70th anniversary. In the last couple of months, we saw the announcements of the Thrustmaster T80 488 GTB and the Thrustmaster Ferrari 250 GTO rim. These are now joined by the TS-PC Racer Ferrari 488 Challenge Edition racing wheel.
The wheel base is not new and has already proven itself in the market. You can check out our review below!
The main point of interest here is the rim. Like Thrustmaster’s 599XX Evo rim, the new 488 Challenge wheel features the same hand-stitched alcantara wrapping used in real Ferraris as well.
It measures 32 cm in diameter which makes it a 9:10 replica of its real-life counterpart.
In addition, it comes equipped with two D-pads with push functionalities, two metal rotary switches with push functionalities, and eight action buttons. Metal paddle shifters are of course also part of the package, just like a faceplate “crafted of black brushed anodized metal”.
Where the rim can really set itself apart is with the 15 LEDs in the centre, acting as a rev-counter. By the way, something similar was announced as a stand-alone product by Thrustmaster at last year’s E3 and was supposedly scheduled for a Q4 2017 release, but until now, we have not heard anything new in that regard yet.
It goes without saying that the rim is compatible to Thrustmaster’s growing eco-system of sim racing peripherals.
Starting February, the TS-PC Racer Ferrari 488 Challenge Edition Wheel will be available at $699.99 (taxes excluded), £599.99 (taxes included), € 649,99 (taxes included), or equivalent in your local currency.
Thrustmaster did not mention the possibility of the wheel being sold separately. However, the mentioned eco-system compatibility could allude to a stand-alone release in the (near) future.
