Presenting our reivew of the Ricmotech Short Shifter Kit for the Thrustmaster TH8A and TH8RS shifters. The kit is available from Ricmotech for $39.95 and shortens the shifter throws 35% for-aft and 20% side-to-side, although we’re not sure quit sure how the side to side throw is any shorter.
The kit comes with a heavy duty plastic adaptor, four longer bolts, shrink wrap and instructions. The instructions and installation were pretty straight forward except for the fact that the instructions made it sound like you should apply the shrink wrap right above the shifter threads. This resulted in the wrap being too low, causing the metal shifter to clang against the stock metal gates 5-R.
So for future reference, if you buy the kit, move the wrap up about the height of the adaptor to ensure it performs as designed.
Once installed, we re-calibrated the shifter in the TH8A software and were off. First impressions? We really liked it. It does exactly what it says, shortens the shifts, which is a good thing since the stock TH8A throws are really long. We found ourselves enjoying driving H-pattern cars, such as the Lotus 79 in iRacing, much more thanks to it. Bottom line, it just works.
The only negative we found was the heat shrink tearing up a bit. This was partly due to the shrink wrap being installed too low but we think that overtime it could struggle. With that said, some electrical tape shoud solve it.
- Works Great
- Clean Look
- Easy to Install
- Little Pricey
- Heatshrink Instructions Could be Better
- Heatshrink May Tear Up Over Time
The Ricmotech Short Shifter Kit for the Thrustmaster TH8A and TH8RS is a great little add-on to the shifter. It does exactly as it says and does really make the shifter more enjoyable to use. We would like to see it a little cheaper in price, but if you use your Thrustmaster shifter a lot already, this will only improve the experience.
