Nvidia Releases GeForce GTX 1080 & GTX 1070 Videocards! If you are in the market for a new videocard, the eagerly anticipated Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 is now available for pre-order! Nvidia are offering a major step-up in performance and efficiency with the introduction of their new Pascal architecture. Just how major is this step you may ask? Using last years substantial and quite expensively priced Titan X graphics card as an example, then slashing its power demands from 250W to 180W, cutting its price from $999 to $599, and then, for good measure adding a bit more performance to boot! All this should give you a pretty good indication of what is in-store for the new GPU’s lucky owners!

Virtual reality, something that will be increasingly more important to sim racers as well as multi-monitor gaming, has been at the forefront of  Nvidia’s Pascal development list. With the release of these videocards, Nvidia is introducing a completely new technology to improve both mediums, which Nvidia is dubbing ”simultaneous multi-projection”.

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang’s statement on the performance of Nvidia’s newest videocards:

 “The GeForce GTX 1080 is almost irresponsible levels of performance.”

Nvidia’s press release regarding their Pascal Architecture and VRWorks:

”NVIDIA engineered the Pascal architecture to handle the massive computing demands of technologies like VR. It incorporates five transformational technologies:

  • Next-Gen GPU Architecture. Pascal is optimized for performance per watt. The GTX 1080 is 3x more power efficient than the Maxwell Architecture.

 VRWorks: A New Level of Presence for VR 

  • ”2x VR Graphics Performance: VRWorks Graphics now includes a simultaneous multi-projection capability that renders natively to the unique dimensions of VR displays instead of traditional, 2D monitors. It also renders geometry for the left and right eyes simultaneously in a single pass
  • Enveloping Audio: VRWorks Audio uses the NVIDIA OptiX™ ray-tracing engine to trace the path of sounds across an environment in real time, fully reflecting the size, shape and material of the virtual world.
  • Interactive Touch and Physics: NVIDIA PhysX® for VR detects when a hand controller interacts with a virtual object, and enables the game engine to provide a physically accurate visual and haptic response. It also models the physical behavior of the virtual world around the user so that all interactions — whether an explosion or a hand splashing through water — behave as if in the real world.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 videocard will be on sale on May 27th at a retail price of $599. A founders edition, featuring speed-binned chips (i.e. the chips that outperform the base spec the most and offer the most overclocking headroom), will be sold by Nvidia for $699. The GTX 1070 should follow on June 10th,  with a retail price of $379 from Nvidia’s partners or $449 for the founders edition.

Needless to say, the GTX 980, which was seen as the standard GPU for VR-capable PCs, is logically going to be lowered in price with immediate effect!
