The SSCA American Truck Series Report returns this week with the penultimate round of the Series at Richmond International Raceway. The racers were informed before the start that one of its regular drivers, Mike Kellenyi, lost his daughter in an automobile accident on Saturday. The entire SSCA ATS Series, and all of us at vApex Racing Group, pass on our deepest condolences to Mike and his family during this tragic time. Though we are all internet racers, we are a family, like our real life counterparts, and the losses of one are felt by many.

The start of the race was modified to have a 3 wide tribute and a lap of silence to honor Mike’s daughter.

3 Wide Tribute lap to honor Mike Kellenyi's daughter

After the tribute laps, Lee Queen led the field of 21 Chevrolet Silverados to the green flag for what would be a tumultuous race for many. There were 13 caution periods for a total of 64 laps. During the green flag times, there were 15 lead changes, most due to excellent pit strategy and some good hard racing. Richmond is very tough on the truck tires with most drivers experiencing severe degradation after only 5 laps. Patience was a key word in the attempt to save the precious Goodyear rubber.

vApex driver German Afanador leads Steve Bushey and vApex driver Elliott Skeer down the back straight

At the end, it was Cody Burke, who started last on the grid, capturing his 5th win in the series with vApex driver Nicholas Maynard finishing 2nd, and Lee Queen rounding out the podium. The 2nd place finish for Maynard moving closer to a chance to win the ATS Drivers Championship.

Going into Daytona there are only 2 points separating Cody, Steve, and Lee. Here's the standings going into the final race calculated everyones drops.

Nicholas Maynard 315

Lee Queen 287 -28

Cody Burke 285 -30

Steve Bushey 284 -31

So if Lee wins, leads the most laps, and has a clean race Maynard would have to finish 22nd or better to win the championship. It is going to be a brawl for 2nd though! I'm excited to see how that one turns out.
