Maynard Wins Wild West Shootout

Posted by Andy Banfield

Nicholas Maynard takes the Checkers at Phoenix

The SSCA American Truck Series headed west to the home of rattlesnakes and scorpions as they invaded the Phoenix International Raceway for the Avondale 100 and the second race of the season. Twenty-three drivers took the green flag on the tough 1 mile oval set in the Arizona desert. Chad Peterson of vApex Racing led them to the Start/Finish line after an excellent qualifying effort with a time of 27.952. The first of many cautions came out on Lap 4 and as the old saying goes, cautions breed cautions.

With Phoenix being a track where throttle modulation, smart braking, and tire conservation is king, numerous incidents did occur but that wasn’t totally unexpected. Again, the quality of drivers in the SCCA shined through as tempers did not flare and classy racing prevailed.

A late caution setup a 2 lap shootout between the front runners Scott Kennedy of vApex Racing and Nicholas Maynard. Kennedy kept the lead until the last turn of the race when his truck appeared to wash to the outside and hit the wall. This allowed Maynard to sweep by and claim his first victory in the SSCA ATS series.

One More Turn and Scott Kennedy had the win

The Top 10 finishers in the race were:

1. Nicholas Maynard

2. Scott Kennedy, vApex Racing Group

3. Nick Leep, vApex Racing Group

4. Steve Bushey

5. Lee Queen

6. Ted Severns, vApex Racing Group

7. David A. Wilson, Jr.

8. David Saunders

9. Jeff Myre

10. Paul Hickey

David A. Wilson, Jr. goes flying after finishing 7th.

The SSCA American Truck Series heads next to Eddie Gossage’s Texas Motor Speedway for the Texas Two Step. This is a dual race of varying lengths that will see the finishers of the first race start the second race in inverted order. Should be a good one!
