T500rs belt slipping?

I recently wanted to increase force feedback on my wheel and everything seemed to work fine, but whenever there's a peak in ffb (like heavily correcting oversteer or smth) the wheel cracks and isn't aligned properly afterwards. I haven't modified it apart from new shift paddles, although it is a few years old now. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?
