Xbox 360 Kinect and Wireless Wheel Review

9 posts in this topic

Our review of the Xbox 360 Wireless Speedwheel and Kinect for use with driving games on the xbox. The 360 Speedwheel is the entry level wheel for many gamers looking for more out of their driving sims. Will the Speedwheel hold up to the standards of the ISR team? Kinect for the Xbox turns your body into the controller. In the case of Forza 4 it turns your hands into the steering wheel and allows for head tracking and speech recognition. We will see how this works both driving and navigating through games.

I can see that Mad Catz Wireless Force Feedback Wheel in the background. When can I expect a review. I still have mine in the box prepared for return. I didn't bother to open it because I ordered a Fanatec CSR Wheel and Pedal combo 8-) ! I was trying to find the latest forcefeedback wheel deal. Mainly for Forza 4, but I also have a PS3 and Gran Turismo 5. At roughly $250 the Mad Catz wheel just doesnt seem like the best bargain. For only $50 more at $300, I got a CSR combo thats better all around and is compatible with PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. But out of curiosity, how do you rate the Mad Catz?

@saroorhai~lol,a lump of coal eh? things could have been worse dude, you could have gotten a "Kinect and a 360 wireless wheel" ,seems like Darin & Shaun may have been a bit too much in the "Christmas Spirit" when they reviewed these huge pieces of "Crap"..way too nice guys!it just seems like using these "Gimmicks" is a gigantic waste of time, and you would be much better off saving the cash spent on these utterly useless items, and just use the standard controller in the meantime..right? I mean correct me if I am wrong, but the Kinect is 129.00 & the..wireless "wheel" [bwahahaha..wheel? not really] is 60 bucks..hell thats almost 200 beans you could put towards a REAL "Wheel"! lets call a "spade a spade" fellas, judging from what I saw on the video, both these items seem like a waste of time and money, and pretty much "Crap" all the way around.

I gotta say this "Speed Wheel" controller is a nice suprise for me.

Sure it wont replace you proper wheel but undoublty it gives much more precission that regular controller.

It removes "speed steering sensitivity" that didnt allow you to "overturn" at higher speeds with analog stick (Forza). It requires some practice but after 2 hours i was able to do much more competetive laptimes compared to joypad.

With F1 2011 you wont have lag steering like with analog stick.

Oh and i cant agree that its exhausting. Just like with joypad i put my elbows on my knees and theres no problem to play for couple of hours. I also didnt have any difficulties with manual shifting (x and b buttons).

I recommend it for people who dont have room for wheel or simply wanted to get another joypad.

Plagiarizing myself a bit regarding the wireless wheel but...

I like everyone else here probably facepalmed when I saw this was Microsoft's answer for a wheel. Well I tried this out in a Best Buy today and... I bought one.

Why? For the love of Ferdinand Porsche why????

Well...

1. Is it going to replace my Fanatec GT2 and Clubsport pedals? Um, no.

2. Is this so my wife can race? Um, no. She also prefers the Fanatec gear.

3. So why did I get this? For my kids mostly. They aren't tall enough yet to reach the pedals in any reasonable configuration. The wheel is also really tough for them to turn yet. And even if they could I'm not sure I want them to be using them yet. Best Buy offered a $25 gift card if purchased with Forza 4 and I'm a sucker for "deals". It's actually rather fun amazingly enough and works better than it has any right to. Would also be a decent challenge for anyone as a brief distraction from the more serious side of racing.

Regarding the Kinect I picked up with the XBox system I got for my kids this Xmas. The autovista feature is exactly liked they said...klunky. Haven't tried the headtracking system with the questionable reviews it has gotten. Driving with the Kinect is neat but not exactly a substitute for much. Getting bunch of friends drunk and trying it might be a trip.

@ocaxeman Hehe, I was just kidding, kinda neat to see the speed wheel in action, not that I would ever use one.

@magik You really think that is it more precise than the controller? From the looks of it I think I would rather just use the controller. I think I would rather use my old crappy drivefx than the speed wheel.

Yes it is. With controller it takes you arround 1 second to get from lock to lock.

Its slow and laggy. And with higher speeds no matter how much you move your stick, car will turn wheels just little amount of degree (the faster you go, the lower turn). So basicly you have no controll and game is doing too much for you. It also helps you to recover from sliding.

Speed Wheel is really good controller and definitly step up from joypad. But ofc it wont replace proper wheel ;)
