ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 16, 2015 I have been working on a project in my spare time of trying to design a degressive clutch mod for my G27 pedals. Unfortunately, the way the clutch mechanism operates forced my hand to make this mod an external add-on. I was hoping to get it to fit within the original housing for those of you still using the stock pedal set plastic housing.....but no dice It will still work for those of you running the pedals de-cased (like myself) though I have currently made a working prototype, and from here I can start figuring out how to make it look good, easier to install, and cheaper to make. I know to a lot of you this seems like beating a dead horse, but I know there are a lot of G25/27 pedals still out there in the wild...and with the new logitech wheels on the horizon, maybe this could be useful to some of you. So what do you guys think? Am I crazy? Genius? Somewhere in the middle? EDIT: Updated first post to include progress
Krassi 692 Report post Posted June 16, 2015 Hello , do you did a prototype? Looking at the pics something looks to me wrong. trying to imagine how press with feet and what will happens. Maybe I am wrong ,but something looks to me not ok with the concept.
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 16, 2015 It looks a little weird I think because I'm trying to cram all this extra stuff without extending the baseplate. It may or may not work like this, but I wanted to try it this way first to keep it simple. If this doesn't work I have some more ideas to try I haven't made any physical parts yet, but hopefully I can have time to this weekend
Krassi 692 Report post Posted June 16, 2015 Just trying to help:) I will follow your mod. Before changing directions or think for improvement you need at least one prototype. On paper things are different than the reality:) Moving in hands the prototype you will see what is good and what is wrong.
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 16, 2015 I agree, without having something in my hands I honestly have no clue LOL. Having the computer helps, but without being able to feel the pedal movement I won't really know what's going on
Krassi 692 Report post Posted June 17, 2015 In development process you will see that even 1mm matter when moveable parts create mechanism. I think it is good to have this mod for G27 pedals.
rebeljes 34 Report post Posted June 17, 2015 hi, i myself would be very interested in this mod! i still use a set of g27 pedals, allbeit highly modified gas and brake i have the TSS brake, and nixim springs in the gas,so the clutch is the only unmodified pedal (apart from a upgraded spring) so yes i am very interested in this!. keep me posted thanks jon
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 25, 2015 A little update on this...I ran it by the mechanical engineer at my work the other day, and he helped me figure out a slightly better concept of getting it to work. I'll post a couple pictures of the 3d model tomorrow, but hopefully I will be testing it in real life in a couple days. I ordered a 3d printed plastic part for my cam brackets, and it shipped today. Once it comes in I will swing by mcmaster carr and get the rest of the hardware to try it out.
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 25, 2015 I might have to bulk-up the bracket on the top, but here is an outline of what I'm going to try as a prototype this weekend. I'm also going to try and countersink most of the bolts into the plastic cam bracket to try and minimize the width of the assembly. Right now the turnbuckles have to be way out there to avoid collision with the bolt heads/nuts. Fingers crossed!
Krassi 692 Report post Posted June 25, 2015 Kev, The upper bracket must be double bracket.
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 25, 2015 Yeah that's what I'm thinking too, probably something like this. I couldn't find it at the hardware store website yet, but they have so many items I probably just haven't found it yet LOL
Krassi 692 Report post Posted June 25, 2015 Yes , something like this
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 25, 2015 I'll see how sturdy the cam brackets are when they get here. If it's solid....I could 3d print something for the top bracket too since it's cheap to have made this way (the cam brackets were under $20 with shipping)
tjb1 1 Report post Posted June 26, 2015 Very cool, if you need any help with 3D printing just let me know. I have a couple of printers and I work as an engineer and use Inventor all the time.
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 26, 2015 I might hit you up on the printing. Once I get a proof of concept I will probably ditch the turnbuckles and 3D print everything but the bolts and make it look more sophisticated. Right now it is fairly caveman-esque LOL
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 27, 2015 I had to move things around and adjust all the locations and pivot points for about 2 hours tonight, but it works!!! The pivoting location that makes it work ended up being outside the reach of the original baseplate unfortunately, but I have my pedals de-cased and inverted so it won't bother me. It feels fairly stiff for the first half of the travel, then it releases. It almost feels like a whiplash motion. It's been a year or two since I've driven a manual shift car...but I think it is fairly realistic. Maybe I'm putting too much time and effort into this and should have just bought clubsport pedals, but for $20 worth of 3d printing and hardware, and some headscratching I'm happy with it. https://youtu.be/qEm4xRZ5SmA

Thirsty 601 Report post Posted June 27, 2015 I have been working on a project in my spare time of trying to design a degressive clutch mod for my G27 pedals. If I am successful, is this something that any of you might be interested in? I am going to have to play with a couple dimensions to get the throw/feel right, but I am trying my hardest to make it something that uses both the stock plastic red housing and the stock G27 baseplate as the hinge-point. I don't own a set of V2 pedals, but from what I can see in videos and pictures....the spring still compresses, but the lever above it gives you leverage at about the halfway point in the pedal throw. I might have to make 2-3 revisions to get it right, but I am pretty confident that I will eventually make this happen. Worst case scenario is I have to move the hinge point outside the stock G27 housing and make a bracket for it. I am currently getting some quotes for laser cutting my cam piece out of 1/4" aluminum, and am very close to making a prototype. My idea consists of a longer bolt for the pedal-pad going through the pedal, which I am using to attach an angled bracket........a turnbuckle, two cam brackets, and a couple bolts/pins. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this? I know to a lot of you this seems like beating a dead horse, but I know there are a lot of G25/27 pedals still out there in the wild...and with the new logitech wheels on the horizon, maybe this could be useful to some of you. So what do you guys think? Am I crazy? Genius? Somewhere in the middle? It's a great idea mate. Just looking at the pics I'm almost certain the pedal throw will function, but it won't provide a significant degressive feel. You'd have to alter the configuration. Cheers Edit: I was a bit too fast on this as I missed your update. My comment was referring to the first pics. The update is not possible for me to assess because it's an isometric - an elevation view would be better. Would be great if you got that working:-)
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 27, 2015 My last post I put a YouTube link of the mod in action, I made a prototype today actually
Thirsty 601 Report post Posted June 27, 2015 Still didn't go through your thread properly when I edited my post - sorry. Just watched your video. Mate, it's awesome:-)
Krassi 692 Report post Posted June 27, 2015 Good prototype ,Kev. Works fine. Btw do you have full clutch travel from start to end?
stevemontuno 172 Report post Posted June 27, 2015 well done Kev ,,excellent mod that one mate.
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 27, 2015 Good prototype ,Kev. Works fine. Btw do you have full clutch travel from start to end? I'm not sure yet haha. Looking at the gear spinning the potentiometer on the pedal I think it is, but I haven't hooked it back up to my rig and looked at the pedal movement yet. I was up pretty late last night tinkering with it so I didn't get a chance.
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 29, 2015 Last night after a few hours of Project Cars on the PS4 I hooked up my laptop and took a look at the pedal movement in the driver/updater profile window. I am happy to report I am getting 100% pedal travel I was worried there for a minute that I was probably getting 75-80%, but it is reading full travel. Phew.... Playing with the pedal modded like this in the game really increases immersion! I was surprised at how much of a difference it makes. The whiplash motion it makes when you release the pedal feels like the car going into gear and the clutch "grabbing". I love it! If I knew the clutch mechanism on the V2 clubsport pedals was this cool I would have just bought them from the start and saved myself the time and effort LOL Now it's time to dive in a bit on the design and see if I can make it look pretty, as well as easier to install
ShredGuitarKev 45 Report post Posted June 30, 2015 Here is what I came up with to streamline things. This part replaces the thick plastic spacer that goes between that pedal pad and the pedal itself, and has some "arms" on it that I can connect my turnbuckles to for actuating the cam system. I sent off a request to get it 3D printed today Let's see if we can put some lipstick on this pig! LOL EDIT: The print is already done. I found a new fairly local source for 3D printing, and WOW is this guy fast at getting things done lol.
