Cheap DIY wheel stand project

19 posts in this topic

I know that there is a DIY area, but that seems to be geared towards full rigs.  Please move this is if it is in the wrong place.

Anyway, I just got into this again with my last go around being with Gran Prix Legends on PC many, many, many years ago.  I just picked up an xbox one a few months ago and bought Forza 5 on a whim.  Of course this led to the Thrustmaster TX about two weeks later and after having it mounted to a sawhorse the wife informed me that I should make something or just buy a wheelstand (rig is out of the question).

So I just can't bring myself to shelling out $130-180 for a few bits of metal.  PVC was an option, but it was going to be bulky.  So I figured that if I could find something similar in function that I could just cut and hack something into shape.

My investigation led to this:  http://www.harborfreight.com/132-lb-capacity-roller-stand-68898.html

Yeah; I know it's Harbor Freight and its $13.99.  I ran over after work last night to take a look and they had one assembled on the floor.  Very solid, very simple, but I wasn't sure if it would work without some hacking so I picked up two of them to try to Frankenstein.

I started to think about how I was going to fabricate a mount that would fit on the bar when I decided to see if I could do something with the roller portion; perhaps take it apart or cut it (it's pretty thick metal).  Well the roller pops right out.  Even better.....the base is exactly the right width for the TX.  I mean we're talking dead on.  About an hour later I had cut a piece of metal (2" blank panel for a 19" rack) and mounted it to extend to the mounting holes on the base of the TX, had it mounted and went to figure out the angles while seated to see if I'd have to cut the front leg to get a better angle.  Nope....it's perfect.  I took some nice finished pine that I had left over from another project and threw together a mount for the pedals and even went so far as to stain it black because it turned out so well.  Now it's not the most stable thing on the planet, but when I am seated and have my feet resting on the base it's a rock.

I literally have about $25 tied up in this thing and if I wanted to be a bit more creative I am sure that I could fabricate something that would allow me to collapse it with the pedals on a hinge or something, but to be honest the footprint is so small that I just move it over to the corner of the room and it's fine.

Just needs a cup holder.....

hey im also interested in building something very similar any chance @Toompaa or @Ashasha can help me out by showing me how you added a panel or board to the roller stands. Maybe a picture of under your stands would give me a better perspective.

Just used some L brackets on mine.  I've actually done a lot of stuff to mine since the original post.  Went to a PC setup with VR and bought a seat and mounted it all together.  I'll put some pics up if someone is interested.
