Advice/help wanted by newbie to build a realistic sim on a realistic budget

7 posts in this topic

Hi Guys I am new here and new to sims kind of.

I was looking at the Fantec Clubsport wheel and base with paddle shift

http://www.fanatec.com/eu-en/support/product;old_product_id;437

but recently I stumbled across the thrust master ferrari f1 replica

http://www.thrustmaster.com/products/ferrari-f1-wheel-integral-t500

what do you guys think about these wheels/bases?

I will be using something like Rfactor, the last time I spoke to some guys I know that is what software they used?

I have used a sim facility built to help train racing drivers so I hope to end up with something that is worth while, just with out the huge price tag.

What is the best I can expect from the above?

I do not want to be driving an arcade game or fast and furious style..I have driven plenty of ridiculous games on games consoles with controls that offer no feed back and work like a on off switch, I am hoping to achieve something worth while within my budget.

-  I do not want separate gear shift, I only want to drive single seater cars as realistic as possible, as this is to be used for track familiarisation over winter. I want to build a sim that can run off my pc which should be powerful enough to do what I want.

Thanks :)

To help with your post mate and give people some idea of what advice to offer, it would be good if you could give some us idea of what "budget" you're working to and your PC specs would be good also. Are you thinking of a full motion rig? Single or triple screens etc etc. the list is endless when you're starting to look at getting serious about sim racing  :D

Many people fall into the trap of "my pc is powerful enough" then try and run their choice of game with all the graphic settings on max and it's slower than a Sinclair zx81 and promptly crashes or BSOD's.

Sorry. I have a small brain and too many different interests, so I will try to explain again...

I was asking specifically about the two wheels in question? are they equally accurate driver input and feedback? is one wheel set up better than the other?

I am not worried about my PC spec.

The realism I am talking about it not about trying to re create the track sensations through my body.

I am talking about the driver input, i.e. very accurate direct steering etc...  perhaps something I will only know I am happy with once I have the kit.

However if someone can say, "stay away from that wheel or pedal set!" I will or explain why one is better than the other one and why.

The budget I am looking at is for those items mentioned at this stage. If I want a seat etc I will build one :)

Thanks for the replies.

you cant go wrong with the Thrustmaster T500 it is built like a tank has good feel more then enough FFB power for any sim set up. Plus you have the ability to swap out differant wheels. The Pedal set that comes with it is not bad for a set of pot pedals, there are also upgrades for the pedals out there.

Hope this helps

Good luck

Thanks, was worried the thrustmaster maybe a bit of a toy... I am still inclined to go for the fanatec, could do with trying both ideally I guess.

This is the sim I used early this year, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iQ-ydyRRbY.

This was recommended to me by someone who was doing some work for a F1. This is why I got into sims.

I do not expect to replicate that, but I do have an expectation for how the car should feel through the wheel.
