Well there is no better place to make friends that are into sim racing then right here. And I second that recommendation Assetto Corsa is a good bet for your first sim good bang for the buck and lots of great free mods for it as well.

Welcome to the world of sim racing

I also recommend Assetto Corsa for your first sim, but if thats still too expensive you should give Race07 a go. It comes with a good selection of cars and tracks, and there are loads of addons available (at extra cost) and free mods are available (some addons necessary for certain mods).

And iRacing has a free 3 month trial going on, in celebration of their Nurburgring 1000km sponsorship: http://www.iracing.com/nurburgring1000/

depends on what you actually would like to play.

True sim racing, iracing AC , race 07

more acrade games, dirt3, grid 2, grid autosport.

With the grids, you can join a lobby and its current voice chat. Be nice, race well and people will "friend" you in no time and you could be playing with a regular bunch.

Just a  suggestion
