zachfeen 3 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 Hey there, I used to race forza 2 way back when it came out and was extremely fast. Recently I purchased an xbox one and forza 5 and thrustmaster tx wheel. For whatever reason I am not as successful in forza 5 with the wheel and I am getting very tired of the "characters" I meet on the online community, I just purchased all the components for a basic gaming pc (fx-6300, and r9 270 are the important parts), and am looking for a recommendation on what sim to buy first. I was drawn to iracing, but in all honesty it looks way too expensive in the long run. I am ultimately waiting for project cars to come out, so maybe asetto corsa in the meantime? speedkinduci 3 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 No better racing that iracing in my opinion, the cost of it to be frank is what keeps the idiots away. Also i personally don't find it expensive, admittedly to a newcomer it is daunting but if you plan your purchases and take advantage of discounts (always purchase 6 pieces of content for) the cost comes down. and other than the £40 a year membership once you own the content its there forever even if you take a break from membership. Krassi 692 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 Assetto Corsa is great game - recommended. Also you can check GSC 2013 and Grid Autosport . Ofcourse it`s impossible to name Grid - Sim, but on fun factor is great. Most of the guys here enjoing Grid Autosport for having fun.Me too.
Krassi 692 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 You can try rFactor 2 free demo and decide is it good for you. With the new PC it`s better to check more as you can titles to test the hardware;)
Paradox 92 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 Race 07 was the title that brought me over to PC simracing from the Forza series. Its cheap on Steam, and there are lots of mods out there for it. I recommend Race Injection, for $12.99 US you get the base game and a lot of official add-on content (some of which may be needed for certain mods to work). There is also a "Mega Bundle", which includes ALL of the games and DLC from Simbin. A very nice package for $39.99 US.
Krassi 692 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 Agree with Paradox - old ,but gold:) Tons of mods ....if you buy it - do it as he said - entire bundle. First check videos on youtube for graphics etc...Always invest some time for observing to avoid unwanted payments;)
CaTaPulT 658 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 Just because you are going to PC racing doesn't mean you'll not come across idiots while racing, especially on public servers. Best bet is to decide on a sim you want to run and then find a league that runs that sim and races regularly on a private server, here you'll get some good quality racing. Even on iRacing, you can get the odd idiots, but not as frequent. Best of luck to you with your PC sim racing. Take care Regards: >>>> Jack <<<<
Krassi 692 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 There is another solution - to become an idiot and everywhere you will feel great:) KIddin` ofcourse:)
zachfeen 3 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 I just figure the idiot ratio will be much lower on pc vice xbox. It's really hard to deal with, people purposely taking you out happens on the regular, I'm done with it. i'm sure I'll buy a few games eventually just gotta find a starting point, I used to be a huge sports car gt fan back in the day. What a great game!
ApexVGear 207 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 On the "cheap..." I also recommend Race 07, but I'd purchase it as part of the large SimBin bundle. It's regularly about $40, but sometimes there's special offers for as low as $2.99. Even at $40, you get five (I think) core racing titles with a few additional mods for them. GTR2 has the largest amount of mods. It was released in 2006, and my track (locations) folder has nearly 400 tracks in it--mods I've downloaded. Race 07 features slightly improved graphics, and has a good deal of mods as well. Search for mods for each, and look for updates and patches that improve the titles, primarily GTR2. You'll also need to test mods as you go for conflicts or other problems, and watch for mod "updates" that don't include the complete mod. Apparently there's still some online racing servers for these titles--you just have to join some of the online communities. I'm also enjoying RaceRoom Racing Experience (R3E). Krassi 692 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 In PC you will have huge horizon of games and multiplayer modes to find cool guys to race with...for example here guys in ISR did Assetto Corsa races and all of them are nice dudes ... or GSC 2013 etc
zachfeen 3 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 I guess I'd like something new and simple. Mods are great but I don't need 400+ tracks or anything. Just a good core of cars and good online communities. Project cars looks like it will be exactly what I want when it comes out and I've always been drawn to iracing but the initial investment seems to be a whole hell of a lot of money. I guess I could always sell my xbox to pay for iracing, my xbox won't get any use if i stop forza, as it was the only reason I bought it.
UNKLE 1,429 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 My opinion is that there's no point wasting money and time on alternatives when it's likely that you'll end up on iRacing anyway. I went through a phase of buying other titles and it just proved a distraction from iRacing and a waste of money. I'd say give iRacing a proper go (get up to D Class) when one of the 50% discount promotion offers comes up. If it's not for you then look at alternatives. By that time maybe Assetto will have improved to the point that it's a viable alternative to iRacing. If you're on a budget then GSC is a good option. Krassi 692 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 UNKLE is right that on 50% off - 1 year to decide do you like iracing is a good price. But I dont share this religion that every road lead to iracing or the best realism is there. Just the most serious guys about racing are there. Thats my opinion. The pay per car and track - have huge pro for me if I jump to Iracing...Too many cars and track for free sometimes kill the joy.
UNKLE 1,429 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 You can be sure Krassi that I'll jump ship if something better than iRacing comes along but there just isn't anything close to the pick up and play at any time competitive online racing that iRacing offers. zachfeen 3 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 It's 50 percent off right now. When I get my comp built I might jump to it and go.

I know UNKLE - I just said Iracing isnt "everything" under the sky , many people don`t like it and stop using it . For me iRacing is iRacing nothing more or less. ApexVGear 207 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 If you're uncertain about iRacing, I'd wait for a 3 for 1 month offer. For $12, you get three months to try it out. In the meantime, you can try out some of the other titles. I like to try out different simulators to see how things are coming along. Many of them, including some of the older titles, provide a very good "sim-racing" experience. I also like having "access" to all the tracks. For instance, it's been announced that Salzburgring is coming to R3E. I'm excited because I LOVE that track--I know it well from GTR2 and Race 07. However, for me iRacing is still not providing the best "experience." I can tell it has a great physics engine, but something's missing. Most of the time I feel like I'm driving with a great deal of apprehension... something I never experience in a real kart or a track car. It's as if I'm driving on a perfect physics engine for the suspension... but they forgot that you're actually sitting in a seat with bushings, metal and other things before you actually get to the mechanical parts of the car. In the "real world," I can "lock down" a kart or track car for real tight laps, but I can also see what these will do in adverse conditions--in a controlled manner. While practicing (or sometimes on a "bad" lap where I'm totally clear of other drivers) I may intentionally break the kart or car "loose" to see what it will do on a particular turn. Though it costs me some time, I "learn" more about what it will do should I have to take an alternate line or take evasive action--and anyone watching thinks it's cool, or they kid me that I'm showboating. iRacing HAS IMPROVED, BUT... I have NO REAL CONFIDENCE in the iRacing physics engine. It seems that the slightest movement the wrong way, or lifting at the wrong time can send the car into a ridiculous and unrealistic spin... It overreacts, and I often sit there with my hands up in the air, saying "that shouldn't have happened." Yes, you (and even I) can learn to "deal with" iRacing's physics engine and become very competitive (similar to compensating for a poor car or setup), but for me, something just isn't right. I don't enjoy it like I do real racing... and I often get "more" out of other sim-racing titles. When driving "for real," the tires are warmed up, and everything's "locked down" and I "know" I'm driving my best lap, there is a "feeling" I get. Every time I look at the telemetry and times for the race--it's the exact lap I "felt" and knew was the best one while I was out there. I can usually adjust most of my racing simulators (wheel, car setups) to deliver a similar experience--and it doesn't take long for a new sim. I can even do the same in iRacing... but it takes me A LOT longer than it should. It should NEVER take me as long as it does to get there--I'm having to readjust and compensate for something that feels somewhat "unnatural" to me. I still race in iRacing... I'm just waiting for it to get better, as it should be. It has the best and most consistent online racing experience of any title (even with most of the rookies), but it often frustrates the heck out of me. Ricky Davies 326 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 I would recommend iracing but highly suggest a "chill out" title like gsc or rfactor. Like me i sometimes need a break from the iracing sweat CHEERS!
sebj 616 Report post Posted July 1, 2014 like many here have said and UNKLE pointed out, go to iRacing. You can get a year of iRacing with a promo for the same or less than you pay now for XboxLive. The others sims are just a distraction. I have a few and NEVER touch them.
zachfeen 3 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 Thanks for all the opinions. I think I'll start with assetto corsa or reactor for now. The xbox is up on ebay so that chapter is over.
ApexVGear 207 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 I finally got Assetto Corsa working with my "old" GTX 275 (it will be replaced soon). You have to modify a setting in a file to allow AC to run on a DirectX 10 card (see here)--it's "unsupported" but I've found the latest advance-release version seems to work surprisingly well. Around 60-70fps if you cut back on the quality settings a little, and fortunately I haven't seen any "boxed" tree textures or crowds that have been reported while using older cards. Most of the community-developed tracks that are available are pretty good. The "Snoopy" version of the Nordshleife is pretty much the same as my GTR2 and Race 07 versions, but with slightly improved features and textures. However, as I would expect, I have to dial my video settings back to get acceptable frame rates. It needs some more improvements and optimization, and that's expected as this isn't a final "1.0+" version yet. Kunos is planning to release a laser-scanned version of the Nordshleife along with 10 new cars in a DLC pack once they release the 1.0 version of AC. It should rival that of the Forza 5 version, and be properly optimized... but I think the Forza 5 graphics engine might win out a little. Overall, my assessment of this "advanced-release" version of Assetto Corsa is that it's a lot of fun, looks very good... but is a little too forgiving right now (in "Pro" mode--no assists). I'm finding that I can brake incredibly late, take corners in much higher gears, and almost always recover when I knew I should have lost it. I'd say it's even more forgiving than Gran Turismo 6. They need to loosen things up a bit.
zachfeen 3 Report post Posted July 3, 2014 Thanks for the detailed opinion. It's sop hard to choose. We will see what I choose. The computer should be up and running tonight so time to figure this out. I'm kind of heavily leaning towards iracing but on some level it seems the seriousness of it all might take away from the fun for me. Watching some of the videos and how angry people get if you make a single mistake, it makes me a little apprehensive

sebj 616 Report post Posted July 4, 2014 Computer is up and running, 3 months of iracing purchased and installing now. Let's see how this goes Way to step up It is not as frustrating as the AI in Assetto Corsa. You will enjoy the progress. Take the time to practice. With consistency vs hard driving you will be well rewarded.
