Observations by a new sim racer

4 posts in this topic

I started out over a year ago with a gift from my wife.   csr wheet and csr elite pedals, a new pc and a diy rig with rs1 wood frame as a template and salvage mustang seat.   not the best but I was proud of it.  Loved using it on forza 4 but just cause my pc was not built yet....   LOL had to move quickly because my wife did not care for my rig in the living room....  where the xbox was.  So going to the PC I started out with iracing but just could not get into it as I felt like I was driving on ice....  every car and track...   I tried to get better but it just did not seem like I could stay on the course for anything.   looked into setting up my wheel, and that did little good.  Had plans for a triple screen setup but just could not see spending the $ knowing how bad I was...  Then I thought I would try rFactor 2...  that was not much better plus it was and still is limited on content.   Well I gave up and was waiting for the one game that I actually got excited about in the first place... Project CARS.

Well with anticipation of the Oculus rift hopefully out soon I got back into things the past week.   downloaded the new rfactor2 build and cars.   I was not impressed.  Read some reviews of Assetto Corsa  and how good it is on the Oculus.   So today I purchased it.   WOW.  Finally a sim that looks awesome, with not great but far amount of cars and growing plus something that I do not feel I am on ice....   (I am not always on the track but not spinning out nearly as much..  :)   So that made me wonder, is this truly a good SIM or more like Forza?   Yes I have a few aids turned on so likely that is the answer It is both a arcade if you want and a sim when you are ready???   Like to know what you think... with the assest off is this up there with iracing and rfactor2?    as for me, I just ordered a clubsport shifter today because I finally found something that gave me hope

Hi Shamus

IMHO...........the best sim around is Game Stock Car 2013 or as its called now......GSC Extreme

As a recent convert from console gaming this is the sim that got me PC racing (GSC2012 actually)

I have RF2 & Assetto Corsa but as an overall package you can't beat it. There are heaps of community mods & hundreds of tracks.

It's based on the older GMotor2 system used in Rfactor but it's just as nice to look at as any other sim out there, maybe apart from AC.

Putting the graphics aside, it's all about the racing and this game gets a 10 on my rev scale.

Youtube's "Empty Box" said, if he could only have one sim, it would be Game Stock Car

You should check out Darin's review

I promise, you won't be disappointed. At only $US29 with usually free updates, it can't be beat.

Cheers

Mike

OP, to answer your question, AC is a truly good sim.

Some people may take offense at your ice statement, but it's incredibly valid IMO. The head physics guys on AC and GSC both agree that race cars are not that difficult to drive. And we shouldn't accept ice = realism.

And I'll say this about iracing, I think NTM 5 is actually very good. There's a sense of actually being connected to the road that I thought was horribly missing with early physics models in the game. So I'd actually put iracing in the same league as AC and GSC. It's not perfect, but everything can be improved on.
