Notes from Milestone...

On March 20th 2014 around 9 AM PDT / 5 PM CET, the Official Demo version of MXGP will be released on STEAM, with the following content.
Available tracks: Great Britain – Matterley Basin.
Riders: Antonio Cairoli, Clément Desalle and Gautier Paulin.
Quick Race: a double race, with no qualification and custom difficulty setting. Players can also have a sneak-peek at the menus and the tutorials.

My impressions...

It's a single 3 lap race in Great Britain (no double race as they mentioned).  Only the MX1 (the higher class) of bikes... a KTM, Suzuki and Kawasaki official rider are available to pick from.

AI shows 4 options (easy, medium, hard & realistic).  Driver aids shows 3 assist levels (base, medium & pro); pro forces split brakes and manual rider weight movements... gear box is always adjustable.  I played my two races with the demo on easy AI and the medium assist level.

It appears to be limited to 16 rider grids, lower than MotoGP13 and real life lineups.  In the demo you automatically qualify mid-pack, and you do get to choose which gate you want to start from (there's about half of them free to pick from).

You can't jump the gate, you're in a fixed position until it drops... so that is a bit disappointing.  But beyond the small grid and start gate procedures, this game feels pretty darn good.  Controls (at medium assist level) feel great.  The terrain deformation looks pretty darn good (even though the draw distance of the terrain deformation detail is a bit shorter than I'd like to see).  AI (on Easy) was pretty competitive my first time around... first race I was learning the track and finished 7th or so... and the second race I won but only by a lead of 3-5 seconds.

Really looking forward to getting my final copy next week.  Really looking forward to having a motocross game, especially one that follows a real world series including their race weekend format (free practice, timed practice, qualifying race, and then a two race main event).  Would love one that did the American Supercross series, including their format (qual, heats, lcq, mains) correctly (which it appears the new MX vs ATV Supercross game will not follow).

overpriced piece of garbage

Consider this a warning Joao. Unless you have something constructive to say, keep your fingers off the keyboard in our forums. Feel free to post that garbage elsewhere. You could have said something like..

"I don't think this game will be worth the price", or something to that effect.

Guess some people simply have issues against Milestone.

WRC has never been perfect, but it's always seen improvements.  I've never gone in with high expectations (no RBR replacement)... but have enjoyed my time with WRC 4.

MotoGP I have zero complaints about the series.  Really enjoy the latest version.

Everything I've seen so far with MXGP looks good.  And $40 (or $28 via GMG) isn't that bad of a price considering how many other titles still go at the full $60 price tag.

OK

In my honest opinion because I played the demo I'm sure that buying this game is a waste of money especially because is not even close to be worth that price.

btw: DjFIL, I dont have any issues with milestone or their games, simply because before I buy anything I try it first and if I dont like it I wont buy that way I never have issues with bad games.

Want to provide any details of what you disliked in the demo (and anything you maybe did like)?  I only found the two complaints I mentioned in my original post (grid size and start procedure).

Final release came out today.  I'm personally enjoying the game.  I think if you enjoy the MotoGP series, and want a motocross game... it's a worth while purchase.

After one quick race (easy difficulty) and one career weekend (medium difficulty; qualifying and double race) here's my good and bad list... most of it repeated from my demo impressions.

Good:

-Controls feel good.  Feels like MotoGP on dirt, with the extra rider balance control (right thumb stick) and whips/scrubs.

-Good assist options... should be accessible and enjoyable by players of all experience levels.

-AI is competitive... I'm only on medium difficulty (two more levels above this available), while qualifying was easy (pole by 4 seconds), my two races were more competitive (finished 8th and 3rd).

-Career mode looks good, similar to MotoGP or WRC series.  Starts with a short 2 race "season" where you are a wildcard entry.  Guessing after that you get a full MX2 season contract, and than move up to MX1 if you "impress" the teams.

-Terrain deformation looks nice... even though the detail draw distance is somewhat low, and not sure that the ruts really do much to the physics.

Bad:

-While it's nice to see a full race weekend option... it's not 100% authentic.  Supposed to go Free Practice (20m), Timed Practice (20m), Qualifying Race (20m+2laps), Warm-Up (20m), Race 1 (30m+2laps), Race 2 (30m+2laps).  The game is Practice (35m), Qualifying (30m, not a race), Race 1 (fixed laps), Race 2 (fixed laps).  Races can be set to 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 laps.  A fully authentic race weekend would had been nice... but it's better than the old MX vs ATV games where it only has the race.

-Maxed out at 16 rider grid... should be 24+... especially since the top 20 gets points... so even with a last place finish, you get 5 points.  My first race weekend I was expected to get 12 points between the two races, that's 15th place in both races, or 14th and 16th... boring.  Guessing this might be a limitation due to the terrain deformation.

-Start procedure is fixed.  While it's nice to be able to choose your gate based on qualifying... once you're in the gate, there's nothing to do but max the throttle and wait for it to drop.

-No two-strokes.  None of the official teams in the series (MX1 or MX2) actually ride them (even though they are allowed), and that's likely why they weren't included.

-In-Game V-Sync forces 30 frames per second.  Hopefully they fix this like they did for WRC 4.  Workaround using nVidia or ATI control panels will have to do.

While it's not perfect, it's very enjoyable.  It's not a sim, but it should make a large audience very happy.  Really going to enjoy this one.  Hope online works well for those who want to play online, as Milestone hasn't had the best track record with online for PC titles recently.  Well worth it at the $28 price tag that I paid (pre-order with extra coupon via GMG).

Hey guys, Firstly I would like to say that I am really happy that there is finally another dirt bike game on the market that is not arcade type or aimed at 6 year olds. I do wish it had supercross included though as I find it more challenging and fun picking which lines to take. I've been playing the demo for a bit and I do like the game, although I have played hours and hours of MX vs ATV Reflex and previous editions of MX vs ATV, so there is a lot of comparing whilst playing.

The graphics are decent. Not crazy good, but good for a game of this type. The sounds could be improved upon. The bikes sound very sluggish and very flat. There is no depth to the sound.

I like that they have the same system of independent bike and rider control, however there needs to be more brake and rider gyro whilst in the air to get the bike to move forward and backwards before you land. The rider control mid air needs to be more fluid and smooth because at the moment, it is very snappy/ jerky, which I don't like. When you do a whip, once you get it as sideways as it will let you, it automatically pulls the bike back straight away, meaning you cant hold a whip. For some strange reason, after you whip, the nose of the bike drops and you can't pull it back, meaning you also nose dive every landing. Another thing I don't like, is that you cant move the rider mid air to lay the bike flat or whip unless you start moving the rider before you take off.

Another annoying thing about the rider control is when you are riding around a big sweeper, slightly leaning the rider and you cross over a small bump or rut and get a tiny bit of air, the bike instantly goes into a whip and you land sideways and crash. It also happens a lot, mid corner when you slip out of a rut while leaning.

One thing I really love about the game, is when you give the bike a bit of throttle coming out of a corner, the bike kicks sideways a bit. It gives you a better feel for the power of the bike and can really help when squaring off a corner. Something MX vs ATV needed more of.

One major update needs to be in the game, is having control over the gate drops. So holding the clutch until it drops and if you drop the clutch too early, you hit the gate. Also, the rider reset range around the track needs to be increased as it can get annoying when you come off track a little bit and can easily get back on track, but instead it resets you.

I love that they have manual gears and the independent brakes in the game. Not sure if I will buy the game just yet as it is $38 here in Australia. It is something I would pay maybe $25 and under for.

Liam.

AWESOME Sim / Game IMO I'm running a full series 1st person 5 lap so you can see the track degrades properly. You have to work with the AI to start or they are to easy. Sit back in 4th or 5th for the first couple laps then go, by this time the AI has moved it's processing power to the front guys, now it's time to try n catch them. Wrecking's not an option anymore if you want 1st! It really has made it so much more fun for me and I think an all around better show.
