thinking about a wheel, dont want to redecorate

11 posts in this topic

i primarily use my pc for gaming but i enjoy assetto corsa quite a bit & would like to experience it w/ a wheel. my desk is fairly thin & frequently cluttered (that i can change at least). the main thing holding me back from buying a g27 is that i'm worried about how much space it would take up &, if i were to use the vice, how quickly that can be loosened so i can put my keyboard back where it belongs.  im also wondering about how violent the feedback signals are, & how much horizontal space the g27 takes up. i dont currently have a large monitor, so i dont want to have to push it back much farther than it is; when racing with a pad i can of course even move the keyboard out of the way & pull it closer.

a big question i have is, will i need to add an additional $150 or so for a wheelstand? if so i think id rather spend the money elsewhere. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Having a wheelstand would be BETTER IMO, but not NECESSARY. It's pretty simple to clamp and unclamp a G27 (2 knobs on the wheel, 2 knobs on the shifter). If I was you tho, I think I'd just get a DFGT, it cuts down the wire count by 1 and takes up less room because you don't have the seperate shifter/button pod... and saves you $100 too.

The G27 clamping systems is actually quite efficient. You just push down on the bolt covers and twist them slightly to release and extend the clamps on the underside, then with just a few turns, the two clamps open enough to release the wheel.

You do need a "substantial" piece of furniture when mounting it--this won't work on a TV Tray/Stand. A regular computer desk should do just fine as long as it doesn't have any flex and is weighted down by other equipment. At the iRacing seminar I just went to, several attendees had them clamped to large folding tables.

Overall, the wheel isn't that "violent," but you want it mounted to a table or desk that reduces movement as much as possible.

The only other concern is whether your desk or table can accommodate the clamps, if it's "thin" enough for the clamps to grab the table or desk top. The clamps do open quite a bit though, so only really thick desks or desks with a frame underneath (with no or very little overhang) could be a problem.

thanks for the replies guys. the problem i have w/ the DFGT is that -if- the g27 were to be 'formfitting', i'd be willing to spend the extra money on it.  the wire count is a potential problem though; i've been assuming there's only one power cable & the rest are USB? got a pretty terrible clutter of cables as it is. most of these things are minor or correctable w/ little to no cost, but if its not obvious, my main concern is this becoming a moneypit.

DFGT = Power, Pedals & USB from the outside edge of the wheel base.

G27 = Power, Pedals, Shifter and USB from a compartment UNDER the wheel base, PLUS the cable that runs back into the shifter. So more like 5, in a less accessable place. Not a huge issue for long term installs, but probably a lil annoying for short term use and movement. I tried being a desktop racer with my G27 once... that lasted about a day before I was like, forget this!

The pedals, and shifter both route to the wheel, one cable each. Then there's the power cable and one USB cable coming "out" of the wheel.

The G27 features a nice storage space in the bottom side of the base that allows you to "wrap" the USB cable inside for storage, and there's channels for routing the cables out from under the base.

In the photo, the two wide plugs are for the shifter and pedals. The "permanent" cable (second from the left) is the USB cable, and the smaller plug to the right is from the small power brick.

It'll be as much of a money pit as you let it be.

You can get some good quality racing on a budget, a lot of really fast competitive drivers don't use overly expensive equipment, most of us that do, it's more because that's what we want.

Many championship winners are using nothing more than a G27 with a single monitor strapped to a desk. That's budget racing, but yet, they do really well. It's a matter of what you are comfortable with and can afford.

Good luck with your sim racing adventure.

Take care

I just have a small computer cart that I have used for years. I do alot of music recording on the same pc so it can be completely dedicated to gaming but I dont have any  issues - there is a small shelf underneath I assume for a printer or supplies that I store the wheel and shifter on when not in use. Pretty much out of site - the pedals just stay where they are. Its a simple as move mouse and keyboard up to the top, clamp shifter and wheel to keyboard tray, plug in power and USB cable and its good to go. Its not normally as cluther as this picture and I have some better cable management happening but you get the idea.  I have thought about a wheel stand though. I just got the G27 a week ago after retiring a Black MOMO wheel.

thanks a bunch guys, the last pic is especially helpful b/c i can get a pretty good grasp of the size. would think you'd get some tremors from something as light as a keyboard stand though!

that said...theres about $1200 worth of mostly gaming related upgrades i plan to make this year so i'm probably going to priortize that. i have a feeling id end up w/ a wheelstand & adding the full cost onto the monitor/GPU/RAM upgrades i want to make isn't really feasible, i'm not nearly enough of a 'head yet to justify it, nor am i warren buffett.  ultimately too much money to spend on something theres at least a chance ill barely use (already do this enough w/ steam games).  really appreciate all the posts though, great community you have here & ill continue to check in about various PC sims.

Yeah the slides on that keyboard tray were replaced with some heavy duty ones from home depot designed for much heavier drawers. The ones it came with wouldnt last a lap with this G27
