Sim Racing experience so far..

39 posts in this topic

Hello,

I recently started to give it a try to this world of the Sim Racing. I finally finished my DIY rig and was able to give it a real try to iRacing and Assetto Corsa and to the hardware on the rig all together.

Since iRacing was down due to maintenance when I decided to start testing I went to Assetto Corsa first. I really liked the competition vs the AI and the Time Trials trying to beat your own times. However, I see it as a place to test new different cars and tracks since it's a beta, not to take it serious... For now.

I spent most of the time on iRacing doing practice on the Mazda. Did a Qualifying once I felt comfortable doing around 1:27 on Summit.

So first race... It was a total mess. I was DQ due to incidents with 2 laps left. I did get off the track a few time but mostly was due to hits by other cars. They did apologize after the hit at least :). We were all rookies so I didn't mind.

Second race.. Even though at the starting line I was third I made a huge mistake. I decided to rev up the engine before green light. However, I had it on 1st gear by mistake so you could imagine the mess and embarrassment. I didn't hit any car but since I didn't expected this I didn't knew what to do so I stepped aside and left all cars go pass by me. Surprisingly I finished 4th on that race so mixed feeling amazing and embarrassed at the same time. So lesson learned at least.

Still learning an looking forward that 3rd race on Week 2, but first doing some practice to get familiarized with the track.

Even with all those issues in those races I really had a wonderful time there and enjoyed it. So, I think that I found what would be my official hobby for a long time now.

I miss my early days in iracing, the jump starts, the big off tracks, collisions, running out of fuel, not knowing stuff in general, your post reminded me of the wide eyed innocence I and I guess we all had when we started.  also I like your attitude and if you keep that you will have a lot of fun, its racing after all and $hit happens, enjoy it jonixc, see you on the track

Keep at it! When you start moving up and run side by side with others for full race with no cautions....you will be glad you stuck it out. IRacing (at least for me) can be a lot to take in at first. My biggest stupid moves seemed to be speeding out of pits..."how many time you going to do this stupid"!

Good luck!

I too am hook on iRacing...it's about all I think about anymore!

Jonixc -  Sounds like you could be a natural in road course racing. Keep in mind that iRacing is all about SR,SR,SR, and even more SR (safety rating). Get your SR up to 4.0 and you will get out of Rookie. Where you finish right now doesn't matter. I haven't started yet and yet I have beat this into my head so I am prepared to be safe, free of incident if at all possible and get out of rookie as fast as I can. Give up a position if you have to, go into a corner slower if you have to, if it will get your SR higher...

Look forward to hearing about your exploits and finishes...

Welcome to the world of sim racing Jonix!   A place where you can have the time of you life and be pissed off, all at the same time.  :)

It sounds like you have the right attitude coming in though, and that is important.  Unless you are an alien, there is a lot to learn on iRacing.  Mistakes will happen, its life.  Try to learn from them and not make them twice.  FannBlade is right though about speeding in the pits....after two years on iRacing, nothing is more disheartening than speeding in the pits.

Deadeye is right about SR too.  I found it best to use my rookie strip to learn the tracks, learn how to keep the car on track, and learn how to avoid accidents (it really is a craft).  You will be amazed at how well you finish a lot of races just by riding around and learning the tracks.  In rookies you can let everyone around you make mistakes and pass them while they are stuck in the tires.  Keep in mind too, that although your skill is improving, not everyone you are racing with is.  Once you get out of rookies the real racing starts, door to door with some 0x rubbing.

Its always great to get new people into the sim racing community.  I certainly hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the tips...

I'm really trying to be a responsible racer by watching all the tutorial videos from iRacing.com and following tips from others that have been racing there for a while. I don't want to ruin other racers experience or mine on the track.

There is still stuff that I have questions about but those don't worry me to much because I do some search here and there and usually that is answered already in a post somewhere.. the worst are the stuff that I don't know that I don't know (if that make sense). I'll have to learn those the hard way.

I'm not trying to rush anything going to higher Class right away. I know I'm a rookie and need to learn a lot... I don't want to be overwhelmed with even more questions now about car setups :) one step at a time.. But if it happens happens.

Again.. Thank you all.

I'm glad to meet someone that is starting out as well in iRacing. That's good, keep reading all you can about it before you jump into it. That's what I did even before ordering my wheel up until I finished the cockpit/rig.

About being a natural in road course.. I don't know about that, but I do enjoy it more that oval racing. I do like watching oval racing though.

There was actually an update (if I'm correct), which means that you get to fast track from Rookie already at 3.0...

the only problem with all the rookies fast tracking out of rookie class is that there are no rookies, hell im still a rookie, i think were all still rookie's but we have a, b, c, and d licence's. that's why iRacings system is so good, it allows each individual to develop and learn at there own pace and in there own time. My advice to anyone just taking to the track for their first race would be to enjoy the journey and don't be to concerned about sr and ir, if your a safe and decent racer these things will take care of themselves. after one year on the service the biggest thing i have come to realise is that this is not a game, in the sense that with games ive played in the past have an ending, where you get to the top, where its over. No this truly is a career, a huge journey on which path you choose to take and how much practice your willing to put in. this will consume you if you have a love for motorsport, im a rear to midpack racer, ive only had 7 wins in 200+ races, and i used to think i was out of my depth but then i realise i'm always chasing the faster guys, and chasing faster drivers makes you faster. Don't get me wrong i loved my wins, but i think i enjoy racing with all you iracers even more, yes we have our crashes and off track skirmishes but i think mostly we race hard and fair, so remember to enjoy the journey because unless you win the iRacing world championship,  i don't think it ends.

Actually Paul, that is something my wife asked me when I started to build the cockpit/rig. "You are going to do this for a game? What will you do with all this when you finish the game?" I explained it to her how you mentioned above... As a career concept simulator. I don't know if she understood, but she hasn't mention anything else about it so... :)

My Sweetie has her own rig, she gets it but doesn't use it very often, she doesn't drive in real life, so it's quite a challenge for her.

I just read the line I just typed above, hmmmm, get your mind outta da gutter? LOL

Take care

Dang, she really doesn't like this sim racing thing uh?

Maybe get her to do some actual racing in it, maybe she'll see the fun in it and it won't be such an issue? But then again, you may never get to use your rig ever again! LOL

Take care

I live in an apartment now and hopefully next year will be buying a house. I already added to the "must have" list the Rig Room. So I guess that with this hobby we all share more than the Sim racing experience lol

Thanks DeadEye.

A little update after 2 more races... Okayama Track Mazda Cup.

Two minutes left to start a Race. I decided to join in. With the countdown with 20 seconds left my "boss" decided that I needed to go to the bathroom!! So I had to use the Warm-up session to do that business before the race. So, to make the story short it was a mess... I mean the race :) I finished 9 after spinning the car in 1st and 5th laps. I expected it since I didn't tested the track today.

The second race went a little better. I improved the Qualifying Time to 1:51.887 and was able to Start on 1st position. First time starting at 1st so I was reaaaally nervous. I decided to go slow at the beginning. I went right back to 4th position but recover 2 positions on that same lap after the 2nd and 3rd cars bump each other out of the track. After that I stayed on 2nd all race. I felt there was like 30 laps. Hearth pumping fast, sweating a lot... gezz really exiting, and the best of all was that I finished with Zero, nothing, nada incidents. First race w/o incidents that felt great.
