Sim racing is my new addiction!

15 posts in this topic

Hey guys my name is Lee and its a pleasure to be joining your community. I have always played racing games I guess you could say. But until recently I never tried any with a FFB wheel. Well when I picked up the Xbox One I thought hey since I'm getting Forza 5 why not live a little and pick up the TX wheel.....Man im glad I did! It is so much more immersive driving the cars in the game compared to a controller. It was a double win for me also because I have a high end pc that I built a couple months back and since the wheel is compatible with windows I have been playing iRacing as well. It is simply amazing. Needless to say after that I purchased 2 more Asus vg278he monitors to run in surround which blew my mind! All I need now is a cockpit. This is where I could use some help guys. To be honest I have watched just about every review that Darin and Shaun have made on the website and they are all great. I am just wanting a little more advise as to which route I should go. I have a budget. I want to spend at about $500-$600 and a DIY is a no go for me. I don't have the tools or the time to make my own. I know stability is my number one concern, as well as not having a post between my legs. I tried a playseat out and did not like the restriction. I have plenty of space in my man cave so that is not a problem. However I want something with a triple monitor stand to accommodate my three 27" monitors and have them close to the wheel. Guys I'm sorry for being long winded here. And I hope that It is okay for me to post this topic here because It was a introduction from me as well as a question. Any help or advise you could throw my way is greatly appreciated!

Hey lbill welcome to the forums! :D

The Obutto rigs seem popular around here so might be worth checking them out the Obutto Ozone is currently on sale as well, and adding the triple mount stand still comes in your price range. check the link see what you think. http://www.mainperformancepc.com/categories/gaming-sim-cockpits/obutto-ozone-gaming-cockpit/?sort=pricedesc

Yeah the Obutto ozone and the r3volution both seem nice I have read good things about both. One thing about the ozone that I don't like is the monitor stand attached to the rig. I think there would be some screen wobble with it, Also the fact that it does not have any tilt for the steering gives me some reservations. I like how they are both modular for sure with the ability to add to them at a later time. I may consider the option of getting the revolution and then adding the triple monitor stand later. I know its a little more than I want to spend especially when you figure in shipping. But I want something that is going to last and be satisfied with the product at the same time, having no regrets 2 months down the road wishing I had gotten one in the first place. I'm still open for other options at this point also.

Rick thanks again for the info on the obuttos! At least someone tried to give me a little insight. I appreciate that because there is a lot to take in when you first start out. Only problem I'm still having is deciding on which one I want to get lol.

You are limiting yourself a little with the budget you have set which is why you've only had Obutto suggestions.

If you increased your budget to about $800-$1000 then you'd have more options to choose from, for example RS1, VR3, VRC1000, HRGT (without seat) etc

I'd keep an eye out in the classifieds for rigs that are for sale within your price range in your local area, you'll get more bang for your buck.

Wow I was expecting more suggestions than this...

With a small budget you are looking at the Obutto, and that's around your price range at the moment with it in the sales. Of course you have stated you are not very keen on its monitor mounting but for your price range its a good option or you go down the DIY route and build something to suit all your needs which again looks like you don't want to do. Either way keep looking and have fun! :)

I like my VR3 but then I'm biased

It does have a center stand but there's an upgrade to remove it for extra $ on their site or you can mod it like mine or have it welded as others have done to allow you to remove the center support.

Like all rigs they have their pros and cons, it's a question of what you are after in a rig, what's most important to you and how far you are likely to go with upgrades/mods.

How sturdy is the vision racer vr3? And does it have a center stand?

It is sort of sturdy and does have a centre support to stabilize the steering wheel support tube vertically. You get some lateral movement depending on the forces you apply - a T500 on full FFB is probably a bit borderline, but in general it's sort of ok imo. Just depends on how fussy you are...

It would be great if rig manufacturers could agree on providing some information about the stability of their rigs. How about the lateral and vertical movement of the steering wheel support plate when forces of lets say 100 and 200N are applied (100 & 200N up/down and sideways). That's just 4 numbers which are relatively easy to work out and our guesswork is reduced significantly.

I don't believe that will ever happen, but it would be great if Darin and Shaun decided to give us some numbers when doing their reviews. Darin is pulling the spring scale and Shaun is doing the readings on the ruler:-) Just an idea - actually quite easy and quick job...less than 5 min anyway.

Next step further down would be a thread where sim racer provide these figures of their own rigs. It's just only a few people have a spring scale at home...I don't have one anyway:-(

First of all, ask yourself a question:

Do you need, or want a racing rig?

Common things to consider here are, that many of the great rigs out there, will transform your PC workstation into a racing car, in other words, it will make it more immersive to race, but the moment you'll want use your PC for other things, it might be slightly annoying to be forced to sit in a racing rig, just to do so.

Also here, keep in mind that a racing rig might give you more immersion, but it's not the same as becoming a better racer: There's lots of talented racers out there, who race at their desks, if I'm not mistaken the 2013 iRacing Nascar Champion is one of them.

If you want to use your PC for a variety of things, the Obutto rigs are probably the best 'middle-way' as it acts nicely as a workplace too - They are like low profile desktops with monitor-stands and racing seats. And very adjustable at that.

Another good, feature rich and cheap rig out there, is the GT Omega PRO rig. If you watched Inside Sim Racing's review, this rig got some flack for not having a stable wheel mount. But since then they fixed that. It comes with pretty much all you need, and yet very affordable. It's not the be-all, end-all rig, but I'm pretty certain that it will suit many.

My advice would be to wait a bit. See how much time you spend on sim-racing, how much you use your PC for other tasks, and eventually decide on an option that both fits your budget but also your comfort zone.

GT Omega unpackaging, assembly, setup and test:

It has to be said, I'm sitting in a worn out Alfa Romeo sports seat, mounted on some sticks, infront of a small square tea-time-table mounted with the G27 infront of my TV and racing. I'm quite satisfied. Sure it could be more fancy, but it works. I doesn't need to be fancy nor expensive to be fun.

Anyway, good luck on your project. Hope you find something that works for you.
