Fresh sim racer!

Thank you! Big difference. But now the computer seems to be struggling to keep up, it's "stuttering."

try setting some of the video options to low. Turn off AA and AF Turn off shadows. Basically turn stuff back on and see if the stuttering goes away. Its likely a frame rate issue, not being there in person.

Set max frame rate to 60 in the graphics options, or even to 40 to start with. It will put less strain on your PC.

Hope this helps. You can find more help on the iracing forums.

So I did a lot of research and found out that if you have the chance, building one is the best way to go. Please inform me whether that is an option for you.

It is an option. I'd love to see what you came up with.

Thanks. I'll tinker and see what happens. I appreciate your help with this.

Okay here we go (scrubbing hands together).

If you wanna go under 900 dollars (though this is 914 dollars), and are not looking to go for triples yet, otherwise I'll change this then I recommend this:

Nice! I think I should go with a triple setup once I'm doing this.

That setup will be okay but if you want it maxed out, you'll need a different GPU, but that setup works for triples too.

Thanks again for all the help. I also spoke with Main Performance and while not cheap they sound like they stand behind their product and know what they're doing. So I guess my decision is whether to build and take all the responsibility for problems or spend more and buy with tech support.

What do you think of the Asus VE278Q monitors?

Those seem really good. 2ms response time, 85Hz (not the best but definitely good), Full HD. Those seem like a great choice!

Hi. I'm just getting started with Sim racing with an Obutto Revolution, Logitech G27 and a PlayStation 3 (with Gran Tourismo 5) connected to a Sony 46 inch TV.

My goal is to learn and practice on the tracks I'm going to be driving on with HPDE events (driving a stock Boxster S). Can anyone recommend the best software and/or online service for a realistic track experience? The tracks I need for the near future are Road Atlanta, VIR, Lime Rock, NJMP and Watkins Glen.

Thanks for running a great site. I'd likely know nothing about Sim racing and would probably not have gotten the rig without the extensive testing and research you offer.

That's part of my reason for being on iRacing. I drove both tracks at NJMP and Lime Rock with SCDA last fall. I studied the track layouts and watched videos on YouTube before going, but it still took some time to get to know the track. The first two sessions were mostly learning the track, and the last half of the day was when it started coming together. With iRacing I can go drive a few hundred laps on the track before going out with the real car, and hopefully accelerate some of that learning process in the morning. I know when I go to Lime Rock again next year I already have the track fully committed to memory. I'm sure it will still take some time to get the feel for it in my own car again, but I think I will have a significant advantage.

Thanks Chris. I discussed this with an experienced PCA instructor and expected him to be dismissive of the benefit of practicing online. Instead he told me that before racing at Sebring the first time he spent 2 weeks practicing on a computer and when he got there felt as if he knew the track after a few minutes driving it.

It took me until the second half of the second day to feel comfortable at NJMP Thunderbolt at which point my car's pressure plate went and I was out. So, if this helps me learn the tracks it'll be great.

I haven't registered with SCDA. They seem to have a great schedule. If you'd like to send me a "refer a friend" link I'd be happy to use it to register and get you (and me) a $50 credit.

Hi. I did it. This is what I built:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VI FORMULA ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Elite 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB Video Card
Case: Inwin 904 ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair RM 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)
Headphones: Razer Kraken 7.1 Channel Headset

(The fan I bought, COOLMASTER HYPER 212 EVO UNIV HSF, was too large for the case so I have to do some research and find a good alternative. Meanwhile I have the Intel fan installed.)

What do you think?

I'm waiting until Obutto ships their updated triple mount before I buy the monitors.

Thanks again for your help. You got me going.

Wow! How much did that cost? Seems really really good.

$2,765 without the monitors. I wonder what this would cost if I bought it pre built. It was fun to build but cost me a night's sleep!
