Hello! PS3/GT6 advice and just getting stared.

Hello!

Wow, I never knew that there was such a niche for this kind of hobby. I remember playing hours of racing in GT1, 2 and 3 and then I kind of got away from it all. Needless to say I have found myself enjoying it again after purchasing a PS3 and GT6. After breezing through the main game and getting all the golds (did they make it easier!?) I found myself wanting more. I started playing online and also looking at the best times in certain events and saw that all the top times were with a wheel. After some online searches and Youtubing I found myself here. I think I spent like 10 hours watching videos at work on downtime and knew I wanted to get into this. I also looked into the whole PC side of things but I think that will be down the road for me. So my question would be for some advice on getting started with a setup that would be transferable from the PS3 to the PC eventually. I would rather buy better hardware that would last me many years if possible. Saying that, I have been really impressed with all the vids of the Thrustmaster T500RS and pedal setup... I also would get the shifter so I could use the clutch. Any feedback on that would be great... and as for a rig I am looking at the Obutto Revolution. I have an empty room with plenty of space. Already have a nice Sony Surround system that I would want to incorporate as well. Also,  I really would like a big Tachometer (a real one) in front of me. I really like playing it without all the gauges on the screen. Any advice on where to start with that will also be awesome.   :)  I also have a Sony 40inch LED at 60mhz for now... which I notice has a hard time keeping up with the PS3 and GT6 :(   Should I put it in the bathroom and get a new one?

I know that's a lot for one post but I figured I would just throw it all out there as I begin to search the forum.

Hey thanks a lot for all the info so far and I look forward to meeting some of y'all on the track someday.

Jesse

Wheels...

If you're never going to try anything on the Xbox 360 or Xbox One, and want a wheel that's compatible with PS3 and PC then I would probably go with the Thrustmaster T500.

The Logitech G27 is your second option, and though not as nice or "strong" as the T500, it's still a very good wheel (owned one), and it comes with a shifter. You can also probably find a good used one to try for a while.

If you're interested in PS4 and/or Xbox One compatibility, then you'll need to do some more research.

Right now...

Xbox One: Thrustmaster TX

PS4: Still not sure what the final word is on wheel compatibility at this time. I would assume the T500 and G27 will work, but that's not clear--maybe others can clarify this.

Fanatec offers very good wheels. Some are PC and PS3 (emulated as a G27) compatible, and a couple of the models are compatible with Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. However, at this time, Fanatec is not producing a wheel that is compatible with the Xbox One--their current wheels are only compatible with Xbox 360 (as well as the other two platforms). I currently own a CSR Elite, which appears to be discontinued.

Clutch in GT5 Prologue, GT5, and GT6 is horrible!

You can actually "adapt" and learn how to use it, and even post really good lap times, but it can be incredibly frustrating to use...

Yet I still use it myself, even though most other titles that support a clutch work much better...

Problems...

1. The disengage/engage point is almost "at the floor" and is very unrealistic

2. It's not analogue, just an "on-off" point

3. You must lift almost completely off the throttle to make a "proper" (according to GT6) shift

4. If you get it wrong (shift before the on-off disengage-engage point, or with too much throttle) it goes into neutral--even if the physical stick is in a slot.

Funny thing, I just picked up a pre-owned copy of Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends (reviews weren't great, but I'm enjoying it) for the Xbox 360, and it's clutch model is awesome. Why can't they get it right in GT5-6?

Anyway, that's my thirty cents...

My current setup

Fanatec CSR Elite, Clubsport Pedals V2, Fanatec Porsche Sequential Shifter, Logitech shifter (from a G27) connected to the wheel with a Basherboards (basherboards.comFL2 Shifter Adapter and a switch to change shifters on the fly. The TV is a 37" 60hz, and it works just fine with my setup.

Hi Jesse and welcome to the forums. :)

The Thrustmaster T500RS is a nice wheel, I have one and am very pleased with it. The pedal set is good, it comes with it's own stiff brake mod (Nixim style) but there are two other aftermarket mods for the brake, Basherboard's mod which uses skateboard bushings (inexpensive) and the Bodin loadcell mod which works on foot pressure more than pedal distance travel (expensive) I have this and love it, made a huge difference in my braking, a lot tougher to lock up the brakes on any sim.

As for using a real tachometer, I don't think you can use one with a PS3. This is PC territory only since it requires software drivers to run the interface board that runs the Tach.

The Obutto R3volution is a nice cockpit and comes with many accessories other cockpits have as payable options. I have the older Obutto cockpit, the oZone and it's rock solid, Obutto put out good quality stuff.

Good luck with whatever way you decide to go and most of all, enjoy and have fun. :)

Take care

Also very interested in PS3 / GT5 or GT6 as a starting sim. Right now there are no Obutto Ozones avaible until March/April... so I'm going to have to wait on that. My plan was to pick up a g27 or a T500RS...

Would like to hear more about entry level rigs.

If i was to pick between the T500rs and G27, go for the T500 both wheels are great and i own the G27, but you will find much smoother movements with the T500rs and not to mention some cool wheel add-ons like the F1 rim With rigs them selves it's down to your own needs. I would go for the Obutto or maybe the GT Omega PRO both will suit console and PC racing if you decide to go there. http://www.gtomegaracing.com/shop/gt-omega-pro-racing-simulator-cockpits

Thanks for the general encouragement. I'm still having a difficult time deciding on an entry level rig. Right now I'm playing GT 6 and enjoying it but I think it will be much better with a wheel. The main thing I'm having a hard time with is where to start. Realistically I can pick up a G27 for $220 on amazon and a wheel stand for $190 for an out the door basic setup at $410. I'm just afraid that if I buy that and I like it, I'll want to upgrade to the T500RS and the Obutto Ozone (Which seem like the best bang for your buck ~ but I could be wrong ~ at about $1000)... $1000 is a little more than I'd like to spend but still seems like a really good setup for the price.

Has anyone spent $400 on equipment only to regret it because they feel like it would have been better just to spend $1000 for a better setup?

If you can manage it, go for the $410 now, then if you LOVE IT, and feel the need to upgrade, sell the G27 and stand, either to a friend, on eBay, or on this forum.

The G27 is still and excellent wheel. If you're "sold" on sim-racing, then you could get the Obutto first and mount the G27 on it.
