It's funny listening to the debates about stepper motors VS servo motors.  In the world of CNC machining steppers motors have been used for years, but the industry trend is away from stepper motors to Servo motors.

In our world of sim racing I don't think it makes a difference IF you have good software to control the stepper motor resolution. When you pay more for servo motors then you are buying more accuracy and quality in the motor.

I think the accuforce uses a stepper motor because it comes in at "right" price point in the sim world. Servo motors are typical double or triple the price of a stepper.

Accuracy

Since the encoder...

Cheers for that Steve:-)

Thats a cool unit, for $1900 EUR its not a bad price. I am still convinced by seat movers so will build one, likely before I get an AF,...ok ..hopefully :)

It is at a good price, I was a little worried it might be slow and not enough tactile detail compared to the likes of a D-Box but looking at this video I can see it reacts well in iRacing, the motion seems a little extreme in this video so I'd likely turn it down a little for VR

How is the engine life calculated? Is it 2000 hours suggested it´s used at 100 % capacity or if you use say 60 % max of the max torque I can expect 40 % more hours?

Otherwise if I use it 1h per day it´s just a life span of 5,47 years approx :(

Just ordered a small mige package.

This is the one i was leaning more towards getting over the Pagnian ,it seems like it has a bit more movement and i really like this design,,,Although i think the noise of the actuator's on both really would start to get on my tits,,,so i recon i'll probably end up going for the Geko GS-105C,,

Pagnian does look the bollocks though,,lol

Yeah the noise is annoying and is typical of those actuators including the SimXperience, it won't matter much with VR since you'll be wanting to use the 3D sound headphones for the Oculus.  The Geko I like the technology and price but less so the driving position and looks, I guess that's typical though for motion having to compromise on some things or else spend more money.

Nice platform, I still think that moving pedals and wheel is best for flight sims.

I hope to have my 3DOF motion seat built by the winter and I'll document here. I'll have as step by step guide as possible as I will look to build another in the coming years for my son.  Hopefully I can convince you guys to go seat mover for racing titles and myself that I made the right choice in the end :)

Horses for courses, as you know SebJ I wasn't convinced with a seat mover when I first tried it and it's been about 8 times now that I've tried and I'm still not convinced it's the way to go for VR.  There's some debate over in the iRacing forums as to which is the best motion direction to go in for VR, some are even suggesting just to stick with SimVibe.  I think once VR takes off then we are going to have a clearer picture as to which type of motion or combination is better.  We need someone like Barry with the funds, knowledge and connections to try out a range of setups with VR and see which comes out on top.

The main benefits of a seat mover are that it's fast to react so that it can convey the g-forces better than a whole rig motion platform.  However if you are wearing a VR headset then you won't want that movement because it isn't representing what you are seeing and could end up making you feel very nauseous, a GS4 seat would be much better for VR to simulate G forces.   So you'd likely have to turn the profile down on any seat or platform motion.

I like the idea of just using two front actuators on the T1000 to behave like the front suspension and switch off all the G-Force effects and turn the motion down so that it's moving just enough to convey the car body roll and up/down suspension behavior.

I'm forever changing my mind on this though

I've been doing a lot of reading on a few forums and as you point out it is essential to turn down motion for use with VR.  The interesting thing too, the feedback from folks is that turning down the motion aids with immersion because of the presence effect. So, more motion for triples but less for VR.  I haven't read that once the motion is turned down that it creates motion sickness. I'll be the guinea pig and let you know how it goes late spring next year.

have you tried a motion seat with gear motors or with actuators? or both?

I've only tried a stage IV SimXperience on multiple occasions with VR and with triples.  You're right you want the motion to be turned up on triples but the opposite for VR.

Getting nauseous with VR isn't fun, the fact that I get it bad when I reverse the car makes me cautious with motion because if the motion doesn't line up with what my brain is expecting then it's just going to either kill the immersion or at worst make me feel nauseous which is simply a waste of $.

Yeah best thing to do is to spend the least amount of cash until you know for sure if it's going to work well with VR or build/buy motion that can be upgraded in stages.

That's why I went with the full chassis and extensions simvibe setup cause then it gave me a good idea of what I'd like for VR and didn't cost an arm and a leg.  As I've said before after running the full simvibe setup and DK2 I really think you need very little motion - a GS4 might even be enough if they had any for sale

Recently I was tweaking some settings in iRacing, particularly with sound and stumbled on a setting in the app.ini file that I think everyone should try.

I use a surround headset and I found the cars engine sound was over powering all the other external sounds like tire noise, other cars engine etc. Adjusting the in game sound sliders didn't do the trick, what did was this setting.

stereoStreamInSurroundBalance=0.080000

Now I have no issues hearing tire squeal and the other racing cars coming up closer behind me and passing me.

New Build Update

Over the last few months I've done a TON of research on doing a motion rig. I have lately been sourcing parts and starting to build out the electronics. For those following other posts, Steve Spenceley has assisted me in the chassis design and build approach.

The rig is based of 80/20 aluminium and will be a seat mover with traction loss run by simtools software.

I posted a pic of what the rig will look like on the first page of this thread and I'll post general updates here as the build comes together to gather feedback and share with the community. A more detailed thread is on xsim forums as I'm getting some help there to move me along. You can find a link to that thread below in my sig.

More updates to follow...

Some progress so far.

I've started the electrical build. This means sourcing the power supplies, controllers, etc and doing some soldering of components. I have the JRKs which are the controllers all done and I'm using an Elite 130 case to mount it all in.

In the pic you can see the heatsinks sitting on top of the JRKs.

Thanks go to Steve Spenceley I now have a universal welded to my plates.  I made some progress on electronics as well. I made all the connectors from scratch..way cheaper and more fun :)  Almost done electronics now and I will be taking my steel plates for powder coating next week.

You are going to have one hell of a rig Seb, can't wait to see it all finished up. You better get cracking to have it all finished by May.  BTW you could end up getting your CV1 sooner once they clear out all the duplicate and fraudulent pre-orders

Thanks UNKLE! You betcha! I think I'll have motion complete by end of March at this rate. I also have a Mod27D 290mm coming via Steve and he'll make a button box for me which I also need to spend some time on wiring and sourcing buttons for. This will go on my OSW when its complete. I figure March...no rush. So by May I'll be in sim racing nirvana with a much much lighter wallet. But I dont foresee any other major expenses afterwards maybe except for a better video card in June.

Thank guys, I cannot wait to be well enough again!!! I do appreciate Mayaman's extreme patience!

CAD work is about all I can do at the moment. Yesterday I visited the leading Canadain specialist, so finger crossed he can find to a solution 9-month long issue... I miss making real projects, but happy to help out in a small way!!!

I have to apologise to Seb for the worst welds in my career! Welding even a simple project with your head spinning is truly hard!!!
