sebj 616 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 @UNKLE I did! Mount panorama baby. Incredible....Thats why I had to fix my shifter today
UNKLE 1,429 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 Everything about that car is incredible in VR, the vantage point, the sound, the simplicity of the cockpit, the speed. I want to make a replica of the steering wheel for that car and get my Champcar shifter positioned in exactly the same location as that car.
sebj 616 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 That would be cool UNKLE. I love that car too. I ran one season or a bit of one in it a while back. I'd like to get back in...it will cost me a bunch of SR but what the heck. Having a replica would be great. One thing I'm noticing is that there is a large tolerance in VR for size of wheel and even sitting position. But I do notice that a stronger wheel could be better and some motion as well. Its like being alive missing some of your senses. I didnt get this need when using triples.
UNKLE 1,429 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 (edited) I agree with you when I was using the DK2 I noticed the T500 just didn't feel right to me, there's something about VR that makes you notice the things that are missing. That's the very reason why I jumped to the AF and I'm itching for just a little bit of motion, my hope is the GS5 seat will be enough. Have you edited the cockpit camera to get your positioning exact? There some variances between cars so I have a VR cockpit cam for every car. sebj 616 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 No I haven't yet. I'd like to put the camera into a more semi permanent position tonight first. Will do though thanks for th heads up.
Avenga76 835 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 Glad to see you guys are enjoying VR. It is pretty amazing aye. No way I could go back to monitors. SimVibe, AF, GS-4 and motion really helps with VR, you are right in that VR makes you notice what is missing but when you have all the motion and everything it feels amazing. ThreeDprof 6 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 So happy to be among those discovering VR My experiences have been a clone of what has been described. Getting so exciting about building my rig. Sebj, what would you sell your triples for? I still do development work and a triple screen setup is excellent for that. 1 sebj reacted to this
sebj 616 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 Hi @ThreeDprof I think 120hz is overkill for dev work but if you're still interested PM me.
Crafty Fox 17 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Congrats on the purchase @sebj was fun reading your excitement and joy. Lots of guys are really saying how good it is and can only get better as the game support/development improves. 2 sebj and UNKLE reacted to this
UNKLE 1,429 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 (edited) So SebJ, what iRacing settings have you found best with the Rift so far? I've read that it's best to switch off AA and then use supersample. I think I'll need another couple of days tinkering with VR desktop, simvibe, Accuforce settings and Rift settings before everything is running A1. I was yearning for traction loss motion in the Lotus 79 last night. I was having a blast, had to remind myself to look into the corners with the head tracking rather than looking straight on like a traditional monitor, it makes such a difference when you move your head to follow the corners in the track. Head tracking and ATW has improved things enormously with CV1 over the Dk2 I didn't notice any juddering or skipping and I had everything pushed to the max minus the supersampling BTW did you see this, I want a blower it'll keep my bald head cool!! sebj 616 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 (edited) Yeah I've been contemplating a blower for a while running off the wind setting. That's definitely a project. I left my settings mainly the same. I just took off AA and AF and unchecked 2048 textures. Yeah I hear you about setting things up. I now lose rear speaker for sim vibe but only sometimes so it's likely the 'wrong' USB port. Supersample grinds my tiny 7970 to a pulp I agree with you. Looking into the apex feels natural. I find its easier to sense what the car is doing. I just converted my sim, I'll post a pic tonight. I am running with everything maxed out, AA off and 2x super sampling. I was running the L79 with my rear traction loss at Nords last night, so much fun. Motion makes all the difference. You get used to looking in to the apex pretty quickly. 23 minutes ago, sebj said: Yeah I've been contemplating a blower for a while running off the wind setting. That's definitely a project. UNKLE 1,429 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Avenga are you using the DSR option for supersampling or do you have an AMD card?

Interesting I didn't realize that option was actually supersampling the image. Edited June 8, 2016 by UNKLE
Avenga76 835 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Yeah, I run it at 2x so it renders the image at twice the size then down samples it. Looks nice on the CV1
sebj 616 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 I will have to try maybe 1.3x tonight. I already struggle to keep 90fps.

Do you know of a way to tweak the color settings and contrast? Not that I am aware of. The rift isn't classed as a monitor any more so I don't think any other Nvidia control panel settings take affect, you would have to try it to see if that is true. UNKLE 1,429 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 So it seems that AA isn't working with iRacing: http://members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/3486438.page
sebj 616 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Isnt it better to use the debug tool or the per pixel function instead of AA?
Avenga76 835 Report post Posted June 9, 2016 I don't think AA works that well in the rift, from what I read the per pixel function works better. It sort of makes sense, AA usually works by blurring the edges, especially with something like FXAA (Fast Approximate AA), on a monitor that makes it look like someone smeared Vaseline over the screen like a soft focus 80's porn movie. I would imagine on the rift that would look even worse because everything would just look blurry. FXAA works by detecting the edges of polygons then blurs them. You can get away with this on monitor because our eyes are further away so we don't notice the blur, with the rift we are so close that it will look awful, I tried it in AC and it was blurry as. Other types of AA that increase the sample rate would work better, like FSAA (Full Screen AA) MSAA (Multi Sampling AA) or SSAA (Super Sampling AA). This increases the amount of pixels either in the whole image or just near the edges of polygons then down samples them so they are smoother. What we are doing with the per pixel setting is basically super sampling the whole image so it is sort of SSAA or FSAA I am not sure what would work best on the rift, I think TXAA (Temporal AA) still blurs a bit so I think super sampling is still the way to go. sebj 616 Report post Posted June 10, 2016 Handy script for you CV1 guys. I use this CMD file to turn on and off the rift when I dont want to use it but keep my PC on. It also may help if you do get an odd disconnect or the service doesn't start at boot. sc config OVRService start= demand net start "OVRService" if %errorlevel% == 2 net stop "OVRService" pause I added a pause to ensure it executed and to see if it turned the rift on or off. Make sure to run it in administrator mode.
