Gravel – First Pre-Alpha Unreal Engine 4 Gameplay

Milestone, who surprised everyone by unveiling a new arcade racing game, Gravel, at this year’s Game Developer Conference, have now released first pre-alpha gameplay of the game. The video can be watched above.

What we can see

The video shows gameplay of a twelve-driver race, taking place on a circuit mostly leading through a forest but also including a beach. It is the same location the first released screenshots were taken at (screenshots in question can be viewed below).

Most of the AI and also the driver in the video have the same car, an offroad racing version of an E38 BMW X3. Though an offroad racing version of a Hummer, presumably an H2 or H3, can be spotted too.

The UI is simplistic yet functional: An overall and current lap time counter in the top right, a speed and rev counter in the bottom right, a mini map in the bottom left and position and lap counters in the top left. A point counter sometimes pops up in the top centre too, rewarding points for high speed, for example. Probably we can expect some kind of point-reward system in the final game, such as in Forza Horizon 3.

This is the first real footage we have seen of the Unreal Engine 4 in a car racing game too. And I think it is fair to say that it is visually quite a step upwards from previous Milestone racing games. Apart from Gravel, Milestone’s MXGP 3 will also run on the Unreal Engine 4.

Remember, this is still pre-alpha so all you can see is still subject to change.

Gravel is expected to release this summer on the three major platforms.
